Being this great palace one of the most magnificient buildings in the world and a symbol of the power of France, it was initially contructed by the king Louis XIII as a hunting lodge.
The next french king Louis XIV «The Sun King», had a great interest in Versailles and began to modify and expand the building, eventually conforming a big palace. Although, the palace wasn’t build all on a single construction campain, it took 4 contruction campains to form the Palace of Versailles as we know it.
At the time that the third contruction campain begin (1678) Louis XIV start to reunited the court of France in it, begin oficially stablished in 1682, this was done by Louis in order to maintain the nobility of France near him and that they didn’t have the chance to complot and start a revolution against him. Versailles remain as the center of the power of France until the French Revolution, when the royal familly had to move out of Versailles.
At the end of the French Revolution, Versailles was empty of all the forniture, except of the ones that were great works of art and the ones that had a great intellectual value and then it was transform into a museum, although during the reign of Napoleon it was the resident of the empress Marie-Louise, it was turned again in a museum after that and now is one of the most important museums of France
